Rexanna nodded to his response, agreeing that it was a strange world. And she wondered what Remi had continued to do that upset the gods so much. Here she was, with someone who’s life had been torn apart by them over and over again while she dated another that tempted all of their furies. And Bastien had only been changed into an old man. She felt quietly sick to her stomach for a moment at the things the gods had done – and yet Frey had still blessed her, and Safrin had blessed this child.She couldn’t make sense of it all.
But she glanced toward the den of the dragon when Remi spoke of Sugar again, noticing the dragon wasn’t inside like before. Somehow, Rexanna wasn’t worried. In fact, her eyes shifted to Remi again as she spoke of Vanya and Ronin in the stars, as she turned to her friend and embraced him tight and let him cry if he needed to. Her hands rubbing soft circles on his back with his shuddered breathing. Her throat grew tight as he whispered that he had taken her to the stars that very same night.
She had to bite the inside of her cheek to prevent herself from crying for her friend, for his friends that she had never met but heard so much about. For the child, that like her, had to grow up without their true parents. But as Remi continued to speak, and wrapped his arms tight around her, she tightened her own arms around him and pressed a bit harder in her soothing circles. “I know.” She murmured to him, pressing her face into his shoulder and closing her eyes. “It shouldn’t have happened this way.” She acknowledged sadly.
She wondered if Ronin knew what would happen if things went bad. If he had thought far enough to see that if Ronin had died that Remi would take his place to raise his child. And well… What if the both of them died? What then? She hoped Ronin knew it would destroy his friend, too, and so many that didn’t really know him. She held him close and let him cry if he needed to, inhaling deeply against him as she fought her own tears for her friend’s terrible loss. But she couldn’t say anything else. There was no way to bring anyone back from the dead.
There was no way to stop their attempt on the Spire.
It just simply was.
And it killed her to see Remi like this, poised with more than one life changing events that should have never happened to him. And she hurt, so very deeply, for him.
