"Hope life treats you better," Rance said, grabbing her empty glass of the counter. She'd obviously only needed to sit down for a moment and hadn't really been looking for a chat. He had done more than he usually would have bothered with the keep her around. The downside was that, by the time he realized she hadn't actually paid for her drink, she was out the door and gone.
