Sunjata had never used that tone with her. Not even once. Nor had she heard it from him before either, and it made her flinch. Shoulders rising up to her ears as she seemed to shrink. Not away from him, just... diminish somehow. Retreating a little, into a shell that was all too familiar.
Her eyes darted to his face, then away. Stomach clenching, her teeth worrying at the lip again, biting it near to bleeding. "Okay," she said, near whispering. "I'm sor - " Maea interrupted herself before she could apologize again. Searched for something else to say, some word that might release the sudden tightness in her chest, make the air of the room seem easier to breathe. "Okay." It was the only thing she could think of. But it did not help.
