Toss a coin, make a wish

M  A   E    A I talked to God to no avail Said, "If you won't save me, please don't waste my time." The words stung, and Maea looked away. It was there, the answer to the harsh questions. In the way her eyes lowered, how the hands clenched in silent protest that would never become more than that. Silent. It was in the slump of her shoulders, in the uncomfortable stance and her slightly uneven intake of breath - like it pained her, like the truth was almost too much to stand. She was easily dissuaded. She did think that little of herself. Did that make her pathetic, in the end? And where should she draw the confidence from? What had she ever done to prove her worthiness in her own eyes? What had others done before, as she grew from child into young woman, to help her see what she was capable of, rather than what she was guilty of, through no fault of her own? Oh, they were there now, but it was late in the coming and the damage was already done. Question was, could she still recover from it? The will was there, but... was this woman the right person to help her, in the end? "I don't even know who you are," she said in a low voice, when Maea was finally able to find her voice again. "How am I to know what you are and aren't capable of?"
