Jude
I'll breathe you in like smoke in the backyard light
We used to laugh til we choked, into the wasted nights
Jude shrugs helplessly. “That’s usually what it is,” he admits wryly. He’s gotten used to the comings and goings, having to learn from a young age not to hold it against her. Whether that was a healthy thing to learn, well…We used to laugh til we choked, into the wasted nights
“I mean…he didn’t have to prove himself, right?” He isn’t going to pick up a pitchfork (trident?) immediately, but it seems really unfair - and mildly sexist, which he hopes isn’t true - for Hadama to require it of Flora and not even defend his own ascension to the role.
Jude was born here and has still never been to the kingdom beneath the waves, so while he's the only one visibly sheepish about it, he can't exactly say Flora's wrong. He thinks maybe that's Flora's superpower - always being right, but leaving you impotently mad about it. He envies it a little. "Most of the Mer aside from Hadama don't even seem to want anything to do with us," Jude mumbles. Likely a side effect of being a mere legend to the land population until rather recently, but efforts to unite the races had fallen rather flat. "We're not visiting down there, sure, but they're not visiting up here either." So maybe Hadama would be open to the idea of splitting the ruling again?
It was the best time of my life, but now I sleep alone
So please don't wake me up, 'cause my thrill is gone
