As a trio they make good and steady progress, and with the addition of the volunteers Danta has recruited, before long they've made a wide, sturdy pathway into the forest. Once they're able to duck under the canopy of pines, the going is a lot easier, and there's wood in abundance. Unfortunately the Maverick doesn't have mindreading in his back pocket, so Rae's curiosities will have to remain just that. He does, however, have a lot of sharp tools to play with.

"Let's start felling," he suggests. "And someone should start collecting any fallen branches - they'll be good for kindling." If nothing else, being an Ancient means that Danta definitely knows how to make a good fire.
