normality is a paved road
comfortable to walk, but where no flowers grow
See, this is why Evie’s choice to haul ass is clearly the right solution, because the evil thing charges after them immediately. Luckily Mel gets with the program quickly, the two women running through the cavern and trying to retrace their steps in the dark.

Luckily Evie runs every single morning. Unluckily, she’s not normally being chased by something while doing it, so she has to do something fast. Melita is plenty strong, but her strength lies in her weapons and fists, so Evie prays she isn’t being stupid and reaches for the stone and soil below with her magic. “I’m gonna try something!” And with a great heave she tries to raise a wall of dirt directly behind them. She has no idea if it’s big enough to smash right through, so hopefully the gratuitous stone and clay in Torchline’s soil would at least slow it down.
